Citywalk · Xuhui District

Wukang + Anfu Rd Citywalk

Free, 1.5 km one-way, no plan needed. The only thing to time right is the day — weekday afternoon, not Saturday brunch hour.

The 1924 Wukang Mansion ship-prow corner at Huaihai Middle Road and Wukang Road — the start of the walk

A 1.5-kilometer one-way route from the iconic 1924 武康大楼 (Wukang Mansion) corner up through the former French Concession to the indie-shop cluster on Anfu Road. The walk runs past Art Deco apartments, red-brick French villas, and quiet courtyard galleries before pivoting at the Anfu corner into the city's current style locus — vintage stores, lifestyle cafés, designer plush-toy shops. Two distinct rhythms joined by a five-minute corner: heritage on Wukang, contemporary on Anfu. The corner at 武康大楼 is Shanghai's most photographed angle, and the rest of the route is what most weekend visitors miss while waiting for that shot. Three hours if you stop along the way. Forty minutes if you don't.

What you'll see.

Six anchors along the 1.5 km route.

A French Concession Art Deco doorway on Wukang Road, golden hour, delivery rider passing — heritage half of the walk
Florist working in a brick-walled indie shop near Anfu Road — flowers, warm tungsten light, the contemporary half

Two distinct rhythms — heritage on Wukang, contemporary on Anfu.

  • 武康大楼 (Wukang Mansion) 1924 Art Deco "ship building" on the 淮海中路 × 武康路 corner; the start of the walk and the most photographed angle in Shanghai.
  • 罗密欧阳台 (Romeo Balcony, 武康路 99) Small Spanish-style balcony on an unassuming apartment block, named for its resemblance to the Romeo & Juliet movie set. Quick photo stop, easy to miss.
  • 巴金故居 (Ba Jin Residence, 武康路 113) Garden villa where modern novelist 巴金 lived 1955–2005 and wrote Suixianglu. Free entry, last admission ~16:30.
  • 宋庆龄故居 (Soong Ching-ling Residence, 淮海中路 1843) Red-brick + white French villa just off Wukang Road; the most stately museum stop on the route. ¥20.
  • 武康庭 (Ferguson Lane, 武康路 376) Tucked-back courtyard of independent boutiques, galleries, and cafés; the route's natural midway sit-down.
  • 上海话剧艺术中心 + Anfu Road shops Theater anchor at the Anfu corner (red-brick wall = second-most photographed surface on the walk), then the contemporary cluster: HARMAY 话梅 (industrial beauty mega-store), 多抓鱼 (secondhand books + vintage), 13DE MARZO (designer plush bears), WIGGLE WIGGLE (Korean pop-color toy shop).

Getting there.

Where the route runs, and how the metro drops you off.

Location

Wukang Rd → Anfu Rd, Xuhui District.

Start武康路 × 淮海中路 End常熟路

A one-way linear route, ~1.5 km northeast through the heart of the former French Concession. The first half (Wukang Rd) is heritage architecture; the corner at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre pivots into the contemporary half (Anfu Rd) of indie shops and cafés.

Metro accessibility

Two stations bookend the walk.

  • Start — Line 10 / 11 → 交通大学 Station, Exit 7. Walk 5–10 min northeast on Huaihai Middle Rd to the 武康大楼 corner.
  • End — Line 1 / 7 → 常熟路 Station, any exit.
For step-by-step walking directions, open the 高德地图 (Amap) mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat — pin 武康大楼 Wukang Mansion as start and 常熟路站 Changshu Rd Station as end.

Plan the visit.

Four things to know before you go.

Weekday afternoon scene on Wukang Road — woman in a long coat crossing the street, bare plane trees, sanitation workers resting

Weekday afternoon — locals at work, the weekend crowd not yet arrived.

🌅 Best time to visit
Mon–Thu, 13:00–16:00
Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter — locals are at work, weekend tourists haven't arrived. Late spring (April–May) and early autumn (Sep–Oct) give the best plane-tree shade and walking weather. Avoid Saturday 11:00–16:00 — peak 小红书 hours.
🎫 Tickets
Free.
Optional spending: 宋庆龄故居 ¥20, 巴金故居 free. Café and shop stops typically ¥30–200.
📅 Reservation required
No.
The route itself is open-access. 巴金故居 and 宋庆龄故居 may use timed entry slips on national holidays (collect free ticket at the gate). Guided walking tours are sold on 小红书 from ~¥150 — useful for literary or architectural depth, optional otherwise.
☀️ Suitable weather
Most days work.
Overcast actually flatters the plane-tree light better than full sun. The real dealbreakers: heavy rain (historic sidewalks turn slick, indoor stops fill up) and 35°C+ summer afternoons (very little shade between anchors). Spring drizzle is fine — bring a small umbrella.
Ferguson Lane (武康庭) outdoor café terrace — red-and-cream chevron rattan chairs, brick courtyard, golden late-afternoon light

武康庭 (Ferguson Lane) — the route's natural midway sit-down.

Bao's tip

Skip the %Arabica queue. Walk one block over.

The %Arabica iced latte at the 武康大楼 corner has a 30-minute queue most weekend afternoons. The quieter side of the neighbourhood is one block over — 湖南路 or 五原路, two parallel streets that don't get the camera traffic. Walk slower, sit down inside 武康庭 for a coffee, save the 武康大楼 shot for the way back when the corner has thinned out.
